Beware of Holiday Scams

As the holiday season approaches, it's essential to stay vigilant against the surge in scams targeting consumers. In 2023, Americans lost over $281 million to online shopping and non-delivery scams during the holiday season, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. To help you navigate this festive period safely, we've outlined common holiday scams and provided tips to protect yourself.

Here's What You Need to Know:

  • Charity Scams: During the season of giving, fake charities emerge, soliciting donations that never reach those in need.
  • Gift Card Scams: Scammers may tamper with gift cards in stores or persuade you to pay for goods or services using gift cards, which is a common tactic in fraudulent schemes.
  • Package Delivery Scams: You might receive fake notifications about package deliveries, prompting you to click on links or provide personal information.
  • Fake Online Stores: Fraudsters create counterfeit websites offering deals that seem too good to be true, aiming to steal your payment details or deliver substandard goods.

Our Recommendations:

  • Be Skeptical of Unsolicited Requests: If you're contacted by a charity, verify its legitimacy through resources like the Better Business Bureau's Wise Giving Alliance or Charity Navigator.
  • Research Retailers: Before making a purchase, especially from unfamiliar sites, check reviews and ensure the website has legitimate contact information.
  • Monitor Your Accounts: Regularly check your bank and credit card statements for unauthorized transactions.
  • Verify Before You Click: Avoid clicking on links in unsolicited emails or texts. Instead, visit the official website by typing the URL directly into your browser.

By staying informed and cautious, you can enjoy a safe and joyous holiday season. Remember, if an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is.
